ABOUT
HOW IT ALL STARTED
The American Samoa Swimming Association (ASSA) was officially founded in 1994 with a mission that began not from Olympic dreams—but from a public health concern.
High Drowning Rates: In the early 1990s, American Samoa faced one of the highest per-capita drowning rates in the Pacific. Many locals didn’t know how to swim despite being surrounded by ocean.
Public Safety First: The original goal was to teach basic water safety and swimming skills to children and adults as a life-saving initiative.

|---|---|
| Community | We embody fa’a Sāmoa—supporting one another on deck, celebrating together, and giving back through swim-to-learn clinics in local villages. |
| Perseverance | Fa’amalosi!—daily training plans emphasize grit, progressive overload, and mental-skills work so athletes push through plateaus and setbacks. |
| Heritage | Athletes race with siapo-styled caps, learn traditional songs used in warm-ups, and share stories of Samoan legends to keep culture front-and-center. |
| Excellence | Every set is data-driven, every taper purposeful, and every meet debrief rooted in objective performance analytics to chase PBs and qualifying standards. |
